Upgrade an original Nintendo Donkey Kong arcade board with Free Play, permanent high score and initials saving, and a selectable Pauline Edition, while keeping the original Nintendo hardware. The kit is a plug-in Z80 daughterboard: your original Z80 CPU moves onto the kit, and the kit plugs into the Z80 socket on the CPU board.
Features
- Donkey Kong or Pauline Edition: switch between standard Donkey Kong and the Pauline Edition from the on-screen menu
- Free Play or coin play: play without coins, or keep normal coin-up operation
- Permanent Top 5 scores: saves the top 5 high scores and initials through power-off, with backup, restore and reset
- Extended scoring: scores over 1,000,000 points, with 3- or 12-character initials and separate score tables per lives setting
- On-screen settings: game options, US or Japanese ROM revision, and attract sound set to 25%, 50% or 100%
- Practice tools: start on the Level 4 girder, elevator, rivet or pie factory stage, with slowdown practice
- Optional modes: Wild Barrel, Color Barrel and No-Kill-Screen modes; standard Donkey Kong stays available when they're off
- ROM saver: the kit supplies the program code, so designated original program ROMs can be removed
Compatibility
- Fits: original Nintendo Donkey Kong arcade PCB, 2-board and 4-board stacks
- Cabinets: upright and cocktail
- CPU: requires a working Z80 in a socketed 40-pin Z80 location (transfer your original Z80)
- Not compatible with: Donkey Kong Remix kits (they can't be stacked)
What's included
- 1 x Z80 free play and high score save daughterboard
Pauline Edition graphics: the full Pauline Edition artwork needs five matching graphics EPROMs installed on the video board. The EPROMs are not part of the base daughterboard kit.
Installation
Power the game off. Remove the Z80 from the Donkey Kong CPU board, install it on the daughterboard, then plug the daughterboard into the original 40-pin Z80 socket. For the Pauline Edition graphics, install the five graphics EPROMs on the video board. No soldering is needed when the Z80 and EPROM locations are already socketed. If any of them are soldered to the board, have a qualified arcade technician install sockets first. To open the kit menu, hold Player 1 Start while powering on.
